上头亦称上梳。是旧时女子嫁前改变发型的礼仪。原为古代对男子加冠、女子加笄仪式的通称，以作男女成年的标志。南朝梁简文帝《和人渡水》诗：“婉娩新上头，湔裙出乐游。”晋乐府《欢好曲》云：“窈窕上头欢，那得及破瓜。”又，花蕊夫人，《宫词》云：“年初十五最风流，新赐云鬟使上头。”又，《明宫史》云：“皇女……至十余龄留发，约年余又择吉打扒角，至选婚有驸马，始择吉上头。”《清朝野史大观》卷二引《前清宫词百首》中一首云：“短发初齐未上头，只工欢喜不工愁。御前轮值随歌舞，说着承恩使带羞。”注云：“清廷宫女皆打辫，必自召幸后加以位号再行上头。”《红楼梦》第二十回，宝玉拿篦子替麝月一一的梳篦，只篦了三五下，只见晴雯忙忙走进来取钱，一见了他两个，便冷笑道：“哦，交杯盏还没吃，到上头了。” 后世逐渐演变为在娶、嫁前三日或一日或当日举行，男更成年装束，女改妇人衣饰，既标志成年同时标志可婚嫁。后作为女子出嫁前更改发型的专用仪式。此仪式还包括穿上婚服，梳洗，佩戴首饰等。上头多在黎明时举行，要铺席、焚香、燃烛。总之，世以女子始笄曰上头，实际上是区别已婚，未婚的分界线。近代许多青年女子未婚时梳辫，婚后剪发、烫发、也涵有古代“上头”的遗意。
男女双方在婚礼前，择定良辰（男方要比女方早一小时前），进行上头仪式。仪式须由「好命佬」及「好命婆」（是男女双方的长辈或亲友，择父母子女健在，婚姻和睦者）在男女双方各自家中举行。

一对新人皆要穿上睡衣，女方宜选一个看到月亮的窗口，桌上点着龙凤烛，清香一炷，连同莲子丶红枣丶汤丸三碗，每碗六或九个丶生果丶烧肉及鸡，心向当天参拜。

男女双方亦要准备尺丶镜丶剪刀，即所谓「龙头镜丶较剪尺」，取光明继後意思。「好命佬」及「好命婆」替新人梳头，一面梳，一面说：
一梳梳到尾

二梳梳到白发齐眉

三梳梳到儿孙满地

四梳梳到四条银笋尽标齐

事实上，上头是象徵一对新人已步入「成人」阶段，并祝福他们同偕白首。

备注：准新郎及新娘在上头前须用柚叶水沐浴。
准新郎及新娘须穿上全新的睡衣及内衣。
